Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage: What Expert RMTs Want You to Know

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage (BLDM) offers a science-backed way to support your body's natural healing and maintain peak health.

Curious about what to expect and how it can benefit you? Read on to discover why our RMTs are loving this transformative treatment.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder to address swollen lymph nodes, lymphatic diseases and chronic swelling conditions such as lymphedema.

Decades later, Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage (BLD) emerged, building upon Vodder’s principles but adapting techniques to accelerate recovery from acute swelling, particularly after cosmetic surgery.

What is the difference between the two techniques?

Both Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage (BLD) are gentle, rhythmic techniques that target lymphatic pathways just beneath the skin to stimulate lymph flow and promote overall health. However, they differ in their approach and focus.

MLD is a slower-paced treatment that uses very gentle pressure to help improve lymphatic fluid circulation. It's particularly beneficial for individuals with compromised lymphatic systems, such as those recovering from surgery or cancer. The technique helps support optimal health by encouraging the body to efficiently eliminate waste and excess fluid.

In contrast, BLD incorporates dynamic, sculpting movements and faster-paced techniques that not only stimulate lymphatic flow but also focus on reducing water retention, releasing restrictive fascia, and boosting immune function. These techniques help the body detoxify, enhance circulation, calm the nervous system, and improve energy levels, making it a more dynamic approach to lymphatic drainage.

Integration of Fascial Release and Thermotherapy

The Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage method at Continuum Wellness stands out by incorporating additional therapeutic elements, including fascial release and thermotherapy, to enhance results.

  • Myofascial Release techniques, while sometimes intense, help improve tissue health by breaking down adhesions that may be restricting lymphatic flow.

  • Thermotherapy plays an important role in this treatment by promoting better circulation and accelerating tissue recovery. Each session includes an abdominal sauna wrap, which helps prepare the tissue, boosts metabolic responses, supports detoxification pathways, and calms the nervous system.

Depending on the therapist, additional tools such as gua sha, essential oils, cupping, craniosacral and hot stones may be strategically incorporated to further enhance lymphatic movement and overall therapeutic benefits.

How the Lymphatic System Functions:

The lymphatic system works through an intricate network of vessels, nodes, and ducts that maintain health and immunity.

Lymphatic capillaries collect fluid that passes through blood vessel walls into surrounding tissues. These lymphatic vessels have one-way valves that help promote proper fluid movement, similar to a sophisticated drainage system.

Lymph, the collected fluid, contains proteins, minerals, and nutrients that feed your tissues and flows through strategically placed lymph nodes that filter out harmful substances.

Role in immune health and detoxification

Your lymphatic system plays a vital role in the defence mechanism that protects your body against threats of all types. Your lymph nodes contain specialized white blood cells that:

  • Trap and destroy harmful bacteria and viruses

  • Remove damaged or abnormal cells

  • Filter out toxins and waste products

The lymphatic system flows without a dedicated pump so it relys on the contractions of skeletal muscles, respiratory movements, and the inherent smooth muscle contractions within the lymphatic vessels themselves.

This is what helps propel the lymph fluid (called "lymph") through the system and back into the bloodstream; essentially, body movement acts as the driving force for lymphatic flow (which is why it is so important to move your body!).

Since the lymph is usually absorbed more quickly than it can be eliminated, it may result in the accumulation of fluids between the cells and tissues resulting in fluids retention and swelling.

Lymphatic drainage massage stimulates the lymphatic system, which supports efficient elimination of toxins and fluids thus reducing swelling in the body tissues.

FAQs

FAQs

FAQs 〰️

  • BLD Massage stimulates the lymphatic system, enhancing immune function, reducing swelling, and supporting detoxification. It can also aid in post-surgery recovery, stress reduction, and overall wellness.

  • The frequency depends on your individual needs and wellness goals.

For general maintenance and overall well-being, monthly sessions are typically sufficient. However, if you're managing specific symptoms or conditions such as bloating, menstrual discomfort, sleep issues, injury or athletic recovery, more frequent sessions may be beneficial. This could range from a couple of times a month to once or twice a week.

Your therapist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

  • During the massage, excess fluid is gently moved through the lymphatic system. This fluid, along with toxins and waste products, is then processed by lymph nodes and eventually returned to the bloodstream for elimination from the body.

  • The lymphatic system will be stimulated for up to 72 hours post treatment. Effects can vary, but some experience benefits for several weeks after a session. To maintain optimal results, regular maintenance sessions (typically monthly) are recommended.

    • Stay well-hydrated: Drink water or herbal tea throughout the day

    • Avoid eating a heavy meal prior to the session

    • Skip applying lotions or oils to your skin the day of treatment

    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after the treatment

    • Opt for loose fitting undergarments that won’t restrict the flow of lymph

  • Ite

    • At some point after your session, engage in 10-15 minutes of light movement, such as a short walk or gentle yoga/stretching. Avoid strenuous exercise

    • Keep sipping water throughout the day—adding freshly squeezed lemon is a great bonus for supporting your body's natural detoxification process. Just be mindful not to overdo it; instead of drinking a large glass at once, hydrate steadily for optimal benefits.

    • Avoid tight, restrictive clothing and undergarments - opt for loose fitting clothes

  • By stimulating the nodes first, the rest of the lymphatic drainage treatment becomes much more effective.

The gentle rhythmic pressure enhances lymph movement preventing stagnation and creates a vacuum effect, allowing lymph from distal areas (e.g., limbs) to flow toward them more easily.

  • BLD can be very beneficial during pregnancy as it can help with swelling in the legs and feet.

We do ask if you have a conditions such as cancer, blood clots, varicose veins, kidney concerns, liver concerns, stroke, undiagnosed lumps or are in your first trimester of pregnancy, that you consult with a primary care provider first.

  • It is possible that you might experience an emotional release, and that's completely normal.

As your body lets go of physical tension, emotional blockages can surface and release as well. Your therapist will hold a safe space for you - it's all part of the healing process, so just breathe, feel and allow.

  • Your therapist will begin by reviewing your health history and outlining the treatment plan, including positioning and draping options.

Additional informed consent will be obtained, as some areas—such as the upper legs, sides of the torso, and lower abdomen—may be included in the session and could be sensitive for some clients.

For optimal treatment, it’s ideal that you feel comfortable lying face-up, on your side with arms above your head, and on your back without bolsters.

Your therapist will check in with you throughout the session to ensure that the techniques, pressure, and heat from the sauna wrap remain within your comfort level.

My digestion even improved, and I slept better that night. The therapist was great at explaining everything and making sure I was comfortable. I originally booked a BLD session to help with post-workout recovery, but I was blown away by how much more it did. My muscles felt less sore, my skin looked better, and I noticed an overall boost in my energy. The ab sauna wrap was such a nice touch—so relaxing! Highly recommend this for anyone looking to improve circulation and feel amazing.
